Knox County Schools
DISTRICT 7 CANDIDATES
Steve Triplett is a father and the general manager at Chick-fil-A Fountain City. He has also served as an educator and minister.
Triplett is running as a Republican.
Triplett does not support early exposure to sex and gender identity discussions in the classroom and says “families should be confident…there is no agenda outside of providing an exemplary education.”
Triplett is against continued masking requirements for students.
Triplett’s priorities include investing in school building infrastructure, resource officers in school, increased teacher pay and accountability for their students’ academic success, improving historically low literacy rates, and career and technical training.
Dominique Oakley is a mother, teacher, and small business owner.
Oakley says curriculum that “pretends we have no racial history” damages students and claims that discrimination based on gender identity or sexuality is now “written into our school policies.”
Oakley says she is “deeply committed to equity in education.”
Oakley says teachers are not paid enough, supported enough, and lack the resources they need.
Oakley has criticized the school systems’ response to Covid.
Oakley is running as an independent.
